Mohandas Gandhi Mohandas Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, a coastal town that was then part of the Bombay Presidency, India. Gandhi travelled to London to focal point law at the University of London and to train as a barrister in 1888. During his stay in South Africa Gandhi was astonished by the treatment towards him, he was beaten by a plumbers assistance for refusing to move out of his place for a European passenger, furthermore he was barred from several hotels. He ate childlike vegetarian food, and undertook long fasts as means of both self-purification and social protest.
